Q: Can I use my spotting scope for astronomy?

A: Yes, but to a limited degree.

While a few brighter astronomical objects (such as the moon, stars, and a few planets) can be successfully viewed in a spotting scope, many fainter objects are often difficult to locate or impossible to see. This severely limits its use for astronomy.

A spotting scope by design is ideally suited for terrestrial applications; such as birding / wildlife study, hunting / target shooting, some industrial or professional applications, and other general terrestrial uses.

Astronomical telescopes are recommended for astronomy because their specific designs may achieve high magnifications while providing adequate light-gathering capability required for many faint or "deep sky" objects. Conversely, many astronomical telescopes may not be recommended for terrestrial applications.
