Selecting an Eyepiece

Q: What should I look for in an eyepiece?

A: Magnification, field of view (FOV), exit pupil, eye relief, optical coatings, materials, and build-quality are all important factors in determining which eyepiece(s) are suitable for your needs.

Many users prefer to use a selection of eyepieces for different magnifications and FOV to address specific viewing applications.

For eyeglass wearers with corrected astigmatism, an eyepiece with 15mm to 20mm of eye relief should be quite suitable. If at all possible (for other vision corrections), we may suggest looking through the eyepiece without eyeglasses.

Because the eyepiece directly affects performance of the scope and is exceptionally important in forming image quality, we may suggest purchasing the highest quality that your budget will allow. (A high quality eyepiece may be considered as a life-time investment in precision viewing).

A poor quality eyepiece can diminish optical performance in an outstanding spotting scope or telescope.
